The Maze Legal Group, PC
My law firm opened its doors about 10 years ago in Romulus, Michigan. People often ask, "Romulus? Isn't that where the airport is?" Yes, indeed the airport is in Romulus. Unfortunately, there isn't much else in Romulus. It's a rather quiet community that is slowly disappearing as the airport continues to expand.
I settled in the Romulus area because I had the support of three local attorneys. One has since passed, the other went on to become a local district court judge, and the third continues to practice less than a mile away from my office. As a young attorney fresh out of law school, the assistance these three attorneys provided was priceless. Romulus is central to Wayne, Washtenaw and Monroe County. Oakland, Macomb and Livingston county aren't too far out of reach.
My practice was originally a "general practice" that is common to small firms and solo practitioners. As my case load grew over the years, I added several associates and continued to expand the areas of practice. At one time, my firm had five additional attorneys working in various areas of practice. Thus my firm changed its name from William J. Maze, PLC to the Maze Legal Group, PC. While the firm was growing, I began to focus more and more on defending drinking drivers, until approximately 2005 when I completely stopped taking cases that did not involve drinking and driving.
Nonetheless, the size of the firm, paperwork, and management responsibilities were detracting from my ability to do what I really enjoy: trying and winning cases. Moreover, despite my efforts, I could not find an attorney that would handle a DUI case like I do. As a result, the associates have moved on to other firms, where they can practice their areas of law. I, on the other hand, have nearly tripled the number DUI cases that I was previously able to handle, and my office staff takes care of all the business related nonsense that I despise.
At this time, the Maze Legal "Group" consists of only three full time employees, and one other attorney. I employ additional attorneys to help cover preliminary matters, but I am the attorney who analyzes the police reports and videotapes, I write all the motions that keep prosecutors up late at night, and I argue all of my own motions and try my cases.
I am one of only eleven criminal defense attorneys in the state to join and participate in the National College for DUI Defense, and I am one of its most active Michigan members. I am one of the founding members of the Michigan DUI Lawyers Association, and I am an active member in the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan. I have participated in two advanced criminal defense trial practice colleges, the National Criminal Defense College in Macon, Georgia and the Trial Practice College in Lansing, Michigan. I am certified in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's standardized field sobriety tests, and I own two Datamaster breath testing machines as well as an Alcosensor III PBT. I participated in the 2006 National Symposium for Alcohol Drugs and Traffic Safety, an advanced course in blood toxicology and urine analysis.
My firm employees only the best experts in the nation to help defend clients. These experts include Tony Corroto, a retired police officer who headed the DUI task force in Atlanta, Georgia for 13 years, training hundreds of officers in standardized field sobriety tests and the drug recognition expert program; Mary McMurray, the State of Wisconsin's retired breath test administrator from Blue Mounds, Wisconsin; Dr. Michael Hlastala, a nationally acclaimed expert in the physiology of breath testing, infrared absorption testing of breath, and physiology of alcohol in the body; Dr. Fran Gengo, an Associate Professor of Pharmacy and Neurology and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the SUNYAB School of Medicine; Dr. Ron Henson, a retired police officer who went on to obtain a PhD in drug and alcohol testing in the criminal justice system and in the workplace; Rocky Mountain Instrumental Laboratories and AIT Laboratories, two toxicology labs that do excellent work; Walden & Platt, standardized field sobriety testing and DRE experts; and Dr. Clark Miller and Dr. Paul N. Greenberg of the Forensic Gait Analysis Group, two doctors who have done extensive work to determine the various types of human "gait," i.e. walking, and how this analysis applies to field sobriety tests.
As you might guess, given the various courses that I have taken, the equipment I have purchased, and the experts I affiliate with, I take DUI defense very serious.
Despite the rather quiet solitude of the Romulus area, I have one of the busiest drunk driving defense firms in the entire state. I am proud of my achievements and my success rate, and I think I offer the best representation in drunk driving cases.
